➜ Micro delivers more engagements per euro.
Illustrative model with typical DACH benchmarks (micro ~30K @ 3.5%, macro ~800K @ 1.5%). Real figures vary per creator.
The question comes up in almost every first conversation: should our next campaign bet on a well-known name with reach in the millions — or rather on ten smaller creators with a tight, loyal community? The honest answer is rarely „either/or“. Which type of influencer performs best depends on the goal, the product and the channel. This guide sorts out the tiers, compares the metrics and shows how a well-considered mix of micro and macro creators will genuinely move your fashion brand forward in 2026.
Before we talk strategy, we need a shared vocabulary. Slightly different thresholds circulate across the industry — the breakdown below has become established in the German-speaking fashion market and is the basis we plan around internally too.
Important: follower counts alone say very little. A mid-tier account with 200,000 German fashion followers is more valuable to a DACH brand than a macro account with 1.5 million followers, 60 % of whom come from other language regions.
The best-known effect in influencer marketing is the inverse correlation between reach and engagement: the bigger the account, the smaller the percentage share of likes, comments and saves per post. That is no coincidence — it is maths plus psychology.
Reach shows how many people see an image. Engagement shows how many people it interests.
For performance goals — clicks to the shop, code redemptions, add-to-cart — engagement is the better leading indicator. For brand building, PR effects and new markets, reach is the harder argument.
When you break influencer fees down to a cost per thousand impressions, a remarkable picture emerges. Macro creators often land at a CPM of 8 – 18 €, micro creators at 25 – 60 €. At first glance the big names win clearly. At second glance it gets interesting.
For an honest side-by-side calculation, we recommend comparing not the CPM but the CPA — the cost per conversion. You'll find concrete benchmarks in our pricing guide for influencer marketing in 2026.
The most striking insight from over 200 campaigns we've supported: brands that bet on a single tier leave performance on the table. The most effective structure is a three-stage mix — we call it the reach pyramid internally.
This pyramid works because each tier serves a different phase of the customer journey: macro creates first contact, mid deepens it, micro drives the final decision at the checkout. How all of this is orchestrated in detail is described in our complete guide to influencer marketing for fashion brands.
Per post: yes, considerably. Per impression: often no. Per conversion: frequently yes again. That's exactly why it pays to think in CPA rather than reach.
Purely in numbers, roughly 10 to 20 — but qualitatively they don't replace one, they complement it. Macro delivers attention, micro delivers trust. Both levels have their own function.
Through curated creator pools, recommendations from other brands, your own communities and through specialised agencies that vet the profiles manually. We at Gross Management work exclusively with creators we get to know personally beforehand — reach is easy to buy, reliability is not.
Only to a degree. On TikTok the algorithm decouples reach from follower count more strongly. A nano account can rack up two million views with one video — and three weeks later land back at 5,000. On TikTok, hooks, audio and format often count for more than the tier.
